Dear friends,

Gail and I were planning a river cruise on the Danube with my father and his wife Aug 2 – Aug 10, from Budapest Hungary, through Serbia and Croatia, to Bucharest Romania.

Unfortunately, my Dad is requiring surgery and so we are not going. We have tickets for 2 2-person cabins. The tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferable, so we would like to sell them. We originally paid $4600 for each cabin ($2300/person), but we will consider any reasonable offer. You or they can contact us at 617-625-1586, or at my email: dl@pobox.com.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, please forward this to them as soon as possible. We recognize that this is on very short notice, but it could be a trip of a lifetime! Each cabin is a first class suite with wide panoramic windows, cabins #301 and #302 on the Amadeus Symphony, two of the best cabins on the ship.

Note that the tickets are for the cruise only. You will need to arrange your own transportation to Budapest for the start of the cruise, and back from Bucharest at the end. The trip is sponsored by Gate 1 Travel. The cruise includes:

7 nights Deluxe river cruise on MS Amadeus Symphony
20 meals: 7 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 7 dinners
Unlimited wine and beer with dinners
Shore excursions per itinerary
Services of a cruise director throughout
Entrance fees per itinerary
Guaranteed departures

Itinerary:

Aug 3: Budapest
Transfer to ship for embarkation (3pm)

Aug 4: Budapest

Aug 5: Osijek

And The Women Gathered…

Posted in Culture, Global Sisterhood, Resources by Skye

National Black Lesbian Conference          July 10-13, 2008

Big up and maximum respect due to the NBLC planning committee and to all of the conference participants! By all accounts and as I observed with my own eyes the NBLC was a huge success.

For many, the spa/resort environment helped to underscore the conference theme “Time To Be Renewed”. The women gathered, debated, listened, contemplated and socialized amongst kin.

Highlights of the conference for me were meeting the light-filled women who participated in my workshop, the many couples I met who have been in long term committed relationships, the elder sisters, and the numerous sisters who greeted me with fond memories of reading Skyeview way back in the day on Sistah-net. Indeed, one sistah nearly blew me away when she informed me that my travelogues helped to inspire her dissertation on Black women and travel! Wow!

How To Muster Personal Courage When The Going Gets Good!

The only disappointment I experienced at the conference was having to endure the Christian centric prayers and shouts outs to Jesus during the banquet dinner and gospel brunch. Displays of religiosity in this type of gathering typically strikes me as being presumptuous of African diaspora spiritual practice and potentially culturally insensitive towards non-Christians. A similar incident occurred at DC Black Pride at the Sunday worship service. And, I recall feeling just as disquieted and cowardly.

My disappointment stems more from my own silence at the banquet and brunch more then anything else. I wondered how the dynamic would have changed had there been for example hijab attired sisters in the ballroom. Proclamations of Jesus this and Lord that preceded the introduction of one keynote speaker who alluded to being agnostic. It has to be noted that the designated Mistress of Ceremony Karen Williams has been a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism for more than 35 years. So I imagine statistically there were other non-Christians in the room too.

A safe bet when offering a worship component for an event is to
either make it inclusive of different faiths or preferably
non-denominational.

’cause if you believe that your god
is better than another man
how we gonna end
all your suffering?
’cause if you believe that your god
is better than another woman
how we gonna end
all your suffering and strife?
(Fellowship lyrics by Meshell N’degeocello)

Announcement

Hello everyone!

We want to remind you about our upcoming concert on Sunday, June 15th in Oakland. It’s almost here! so make your reservations while there is still space. Besides all the wonderful performers, there will be there will be delicious chamorro food as well as ice tea being sold as part of the fundraising by Erica. So come hungry and thirsty and ready to enjoy some good food and beverages. Here is our line-up for the June 15th exciting event:

Raks Africa  is an Oakland based belly dancing duo featuring Etang and Tammy.  Being big-bellied girls doing big things, the pair challenge what belly dancers are supposed to look like.  Dancing with ample heart and soul, this duet have been shaking and shimmying at many Bay Area venues.  They are proud to be a part of a long tradition of embracing feminity, culture and power through Raks Sharki . . . better known as belly dance.

*Carrie Gerendasy  **Carrie is an outstanding, high energy folk singer with a superb voice, and a lightning-fast flat picking hand.  Powerful and passionate, her songs inspire and her charismatic presence electrifies the room.*

Liquid Girlfriend featuring Linda Atkinson on keyboards, Cate Larsen on guitar, and blakwomyn on bass are a new musical group with a liquid passion for rock, pop, funk, and indies music. In the past, they’ve performed separately around the Bay Area, always on the lookout to groove with their musical soul mates. At long last, their wait is over. Together, they are “Liquid Girlfriend.” Let their original tunes flow into your head space.

Erica Nalani Benton is a proud daughter of oceania, rasied in the bay area. As a singer, songwriter, student, activist, queer, chamorro, hawaiian, mixed-european – she is a bridge between many worlds and her music represents the same. A blend of soul, blues, island, acoustic funk, futuristic 2 step – check herout! Erica’s using her donations from the concert as a fundraiser for her trip to Guahan (Guam) this summer to participate in the movement for Chamorro Self-Determination and Cultural Revitalization. Her trip is a part of a local bay area program called World Bridges, whose mission is to “foster international cooperation between young people of color from low-income backgrounds, and provides them with opportunities to gain global perspectives on the social justice issues that impact their lives.” Check them out at www.world-bridges.org She will gladly accept other donations specifically for this project.

As always, we appreciate people making reservations. (We send an email with

all the particulars the week of the concert.)  You can make reservations by emailing us at backporchconcerts@gmail.com or calling at 510 533-4732. We ask $8-20 donation at the door, approximately 90% + of the $ goes to the performers. For those of you who have been here before; we have changed our yard dramatically (there is a lot more sun now)  and there is room for more of you then ever. Bring chairs, the shows start at 2PM, the “doors” open at 1:30. Looking forward to seeing you all.
