Artist Ahza Irving

(check out her gallery on Kuma)

Poet & Visual Artist Azha Irving was born and raised right here in Harlem. She first began to write at the age of 6, and committed to art as a way of life as a result of the onset of blindness at the age of 24. Taught by her eldest brother who was himself an artist and writer, Azha believes she’s gotten much of her talent secondhand; her way with words is as colorful and/or as black and white, at times, as her artwork, and it is to this second handedness that she attributes the push to find her own voice. She has written under a multitude of guises and under the guidance of many writers and poets to include: Suheir Hamad, Writer/Prof. Lois Elaine Griffith, John Rodriguez, Azha is also an alumni member of Cave Canem & The Bronx WritersCorps.
