Calls for Submission: Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Women and Trans People Making and Having Babies

(This is not a Kuma announcement, see end for submission details.)

We are seeking submissions for a collection of creative nonfiction stories focusing on lesbian, queer, and bisexual women and trans people making and having babies together or alone. This anthology will focus on the experiences of conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenthood from a queer perspective. Some of the topics we hope to address include, but are not limited to, the following…

• How did you come to the decision to become a parent?
• What was the process and preparation like for you?
• What type of donor did you use?
• What was the insemination process like?
• Where did you give birth? Who attended your birth?
• How has your family responded to you during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth, and as a parent?
• How has your transition into parenthood affected your queer identity and your relationships with other non-parent queers?
• Do you have any queer friends who are parents?
• What is the support network like in the place you live?
• Has your queer community been accepting and supportive of your choice to become a parent? In what ways have you felt disappointed by your community?
• Has your gender and/or identity affected your path into parenthood?
• How has your experience as a current or potential queer parent been unique from other parents? What are the commonalities between you and other queer parents, if any?

Guidelines for submission are very flexible, and writers may submit their stories in the form of memoir, personal essay, birth story, and cultural commentary. All nonfiction submissions will be considered. No fiction, please.

Submissions are due by January 15, 2008. Hardcopy or electronic copy will be accepted, although hardcopies cannot be returned. Please email for more information.

All submissions are welcome and family photographs are encouraged!
