- From the first draft to the final, finished work and all the revisions in between, your writing is automatically protected by copyright.
- You do not need to officially register with the Copyright Office, fill out forms, etc.
- You do not need to mail yourself a copy of the work.
- You do not automatically lose copyright when your work is published (online or in print).
- Copyright can be assigned to another party through contracts, it's something you have to agree to.
- Copyright does not protect an idea. One hundred people can have the same idea, but that does not mean they will produce the exact same product.
- Movies and Books with similar plots/ideas are produced all the time:
- A masked killer attacks a bunch of sex crazed teenagers/young adults.
What movie is it? Friday the 13th, Prom Night, Halloween, Valentine, etc
While these movies share (or borrowed) the same basic idea, the execution of the idea is different.
- If you have sold a book to a publsher, the publisher will file the copyright forms for you. They will take care of the processing and everything will be in your name.
