Part 3

About 3am I was awakened by the sound of Jai screaming and cursing into her cell phone as she rushed across the room getting dressed. When she was done talking, she slammed the phone down. She was mumbling some things. Some were too low or too muffled to understand, but the few things I did hear were beginning to scare me. "I can't believe they wanna have beef just cause I'm getting out." She said getting up from the bed after putting on her shoes. Before she left the room, she turned to me and said, "Whatever you do don't open the door for shit." The most I could do was nod. "I love you, Ma." That was the last thing she said before she rushed out the door.
I tried to go back to sleep, but all of my attempts were futile. I was coming from the kitchen when I heard a car pull up. I remembered what Jai said so I went nowhere near the door. All the lights were off so I was hoping they got the impression that no one was home, but I take it that an impression wasn't enough for them because they began to beat heavily on the door. I was quiet and still, but my heart was beating about as loud and as hard as the guys who were beating on the door. When I finally found the strength to move, I went slowly for the steps. The beating got louder with every step I took, and just as I was topping the last step, the door flew open.
They rushed right in and had no trouble spotting me because as soon as the door flew open I broke out into a sprint towards the bedroom, and they quickly followed. It was a good distance between us so when I got to the room, I closed and locked the door. I dived across the bed and grabbed my cell phone. The number I called was Zette's. With it being so late, I was surprised at how quickly she picked up the phone.
"Girl, why the hell are you calling me at 4…in the gotdamn morning!"
In tears and out of breath from my quick sprint to the room I answered, "Zette some niggas here looking for Jai. They busted open the door and chased me up to the room. You and Tahj get over here now please!" Before Zette could say anything back, the bedroom door flew open. They both were holding guns, and they were pointed right at me. In fear, my body relaxed, and my phone fell to the bed. I could hear Zette calling my name.
One of them stepped closer to me. "Where the fuck is Jai?" His voice was so loud and hard I jumped and bumped my head on the wall. Tears were still falling and my fear was at an all time high.
"I don't know," I answered through deep breaths and heavy tears. He ran up on me, grabbed me by my collar and backhanded me with the gun in hand and all. He hit me so hard I scooted a few inches across the bed. Finally, when the pain subsided, I through my head up and yelled, "I don't fucking know. She left about an hour ago!"
The guy closer to the door stepped up and said, "Fuck this shit, man," he looked at me then continued, "we ain't got time for no lying bitches." The guy got up from the bed and walked out the door, but before the other left he said, "Tell Jai this what she get for tryna dip out." Before his sentence was done, he pulled the trigger. Then before he left the room, he pulled it again.
With each shot, things became surreal. Its like I could see the bullets perfectly as they came towards me. The first hit I felt a burning sensation in my shoulder. The second made me feel like my stomach was being ripped apart from the inside out. I tried to cry out but nothing surfaced but blood. My vision got blurry and my body weak; eventually, I relaxed and fell into what felt like a deep sleep.

Tahj and Zette drove up and saw the door broken in. Tahj walked in slowly, but Zette ran past her and headed upstairs. As soon as Zette saw Kamarian lying in a puddle of her own blood in the bed, she screamed. Tahj rushed up the stairs to the room and saw Zette on her knees in the middle of the floor crying. When she spotted Kam on the bed, Tahj rushed over and held her in her arms. Tahj felt around Kam's neck for a pulse. What she found wasn't strong, but it gave them all a little hope.
Tahj lightly shook her and tapped her face. "Sis…sis, baby you gotta wake up." Kam didn't budge. Out of panic and frustration, Tahj shook her harder. "Damn it, Kam! Wake up! Please!"
Kam began to cough and made an attempt to sit up, but Tahj did let her go. Slightly above a whisper Kam said,
"Jai…"
A pit of rage fell over Tahj and she screamed, "Fuck that nigga Jai. She got you into this shit!" Zette stood behind them speechless and in tears.
Between staggered breaths, harsh coughs and the taste of thick blood Kam looked up and said, "Tahj, it hurts so bad."
Tahj rocked her back and forth. "I know, baby." Tahj continued rocking and wiped the blood away from her face. Zette kneeled on the bed beside Tahj.
With tears in her eyes, Zette rubbed the side of Kam's face and moved stray hairs from her eyes and said, "Just hold on Chubby Cheeks. I called the ambulance and they should be on their way."
It got silent, and Tahj realized Kam was drifting off. She shook her again. Kam took a deep breath then again coughed up a large amount of blood. Kamarian looked up at Tahj with tears in her eyes and much pain I her voice and said just above a whisper, "Tahj, I don't wanna go."
Tahj bent over and kissed Kam on the forehead. "You not, sis and I be damned if you do." Tahj got up with Kam in tow, and Zette followed close behind. Zette sat in the back seat with Kam to keep her awake, and Tahj, forgetting about the ambulance, drove on two wheels all the way to the nearest hospital.

Jai pulled up in the driveway along side the ambulance and police. As she slowly walked toward her home, the only thing she could say is, "I live here," as the many officers rushed her. As jai walked through the house she examined the mess that had been made. She went upstairs to the bedroom. When she cut the corner, the first thing she saw was the blood on the wall and bed. Jai's knees got weak. "Aww damn," Was all she managed to say. Before any other thoughts could cross her mind, her phone rung. When she looked at the id it wasn't familiar, but she knew she had seen the number somewhere.
Still stunned at the scene before her she answered the phone, "What yo!"
"I don't give a fuck what you are doing or who you're doing it with, but if you don't have your motherfucking ass to General in the next ten got damn minutes I will come looking for you, and if I find you, you gone be worst off than Kam!" The tone of Tahj's voice instilled much fear into Jai's heart, and even more so hearing Kam had been hurt.
"What's wrong wit Kam?" Jai asked in a panic, but Tahj hung up without giving her an answer.
As Jai walked through the many double doors to the emergency waiting room, she felt things were going in slow motion. When she entered the waiting room, she saw people talking, saw babies crying, but she heard nothing. Zette was the first one to spot Jai at the door. Her eyes were still full of tears as she walked up to Jai.
For a while, they stood face to face neither one speaking; finally, Jai broke the silence and began to ask, "What happened to K-" Before Jai could finish the question Zette slapped her across the face. Jai let her head fall. She stood there for a moment trying to get her thought together. She looked at Zette and tried to speak again. "Yo Zette I'm sorry. I didn't-"
Zette didn't allow Jai to finish. She slapped her again and began to scream, "Oh you're sorry. My sister might die and all you can say is you're sorry!" Tahj ran to Zette and took her in her arms in attempts to soothe her. Once Zette was calm, Tahj moved her to the side and stepped up to Jai. Tahj stared deep into Jai's eyes. Jai could feel and see the rage over her so she didn't say anything. The silence between them was thick.
Single tears began to fall from Tahj's eyes, but she still held her tight gaze. Jai made the mistake of mistaking Tahj's tears of a sign of her softening her rage so she tried to speak.
"Tahj, I don't know how this shit could have happened man. You can't possibly know how sorry I am." Tahj let light sinister chuckles escape her lips. She looked to the floor then back at Zette who was pacing the floor of the emergency waiting room. Tahj slightly turned as if she was going to talk away, but quickly swung her left fist and caught Jai right in tha jaw. Caught off guard, Jai hit the floor, and Tahj took this advantage and jumped on top of her.
Tahj put her hand around Jai neck and squeezed as tight as she could then began to yell, "No, you don't know how sorry my sister is!" Tahj tightened her grip, "And no, you don't know how sorry I am for letting my little sister fuck witchu in the first fucking place!" People began to stare. Those who were waiting quietly and patiently for a loved one or a turn of their own stopped what they were doing and looked on, but Tahj didn't care. Jai began to pull at Tahj's hands in attempts to loosen her grip, but she failed. She continued. "The only fucking reason I'm not gone spill your shit all over this hospital floor is cause you are the mother fucker she keeps asking for, but oh, trust and believe if she dies…so will you bitch!"
A man from the hospital security grabbed Tahj on her shoulder and instructed her to calm down or leave the premises. Tahj held her gaze for a few seconds longer then let go of Jai and got up off of her and walked back over to console Zette. Jai lay on the floor trying to catch her breath. When she was sure she had her strength back she got up from the floor and asked Tahj and Zette where Kam was located. Zette gave her directions then Jai turned and disappeared behind the emergency room doors.
Kamarian was in an intensive care unit, and it made Jai nauseous just thinking about the condition that Kam may be in. She walked slow and steady, but in the back of her mind she knew she had to hurry. If she let the visiting time pass, she wouldn't be allowed to see Kam at all.
Jai walked into the room slowly. She took in the sight of Kam lying there with bruises, stitches, and scratches practically covering her body, and she nearly fainted. She took small steps toward the bed. When she reached Kamarian, she couldn't help but allow the tears that she was holding back freely fall from her face. Jai assumed Kam was sleeping so she rubbed Kam's arms, her legs, then the side of her face, and began to talk to her.
"Baby, I'm so sorry. I broke my promise. If anything happens to you, Tahj not gone have to kill me cause I swear I'm going to go fucking crazy." Jai dropped her head to the bed and her slow tears turned into sobs. Between breaths she cried, "I need you ma. Please don't leave me." Jai couldn't bring herself to speak anymore. Just the thought of living without Kam was tearing her apart. So as she cried, she held on to Kam's hand for her dear life.
Jai's cries had now subsided, but she kept her head down on the bed. All of a sudden she felt Kam lightly tighten the grip of her hand. Jai lifted her head to see Kam looking at her with tears in her eyes. Just before the nurse came to let Jai know her time was up, Kam, with tube and all, mouthed "I love you." Jai walked out of the intensive care unit and rushed for the nearest exit. She ran outside, dropped to her knees and cried until there was not a tear left in her body.

"Tahj, please. I'm fine. I can walk you know." Kam said as she got up from the couch, but was stopped by Tahj sitting her back down. It had been three months since the incident, and Kam, after a few surgeries, made a full recovery. The most she had to do was wear her arm in a sling until her broken shoulder healed.
"Naa, sis I got the door. This nigga lucky she even getting to see you." Kam looked at Tahj and asked,
"Ain't I alive?"
"Yes sis but that's not the point."
"It wasn't her fault."
"It was close the fuck enough Kam, but she lucky we found out she was through with that shit and that's why they came after her." Kam smiled at Tahj and hugged her with her good arm.
"I love you bro." Tahj smiled.
"I know you do."
Zette walked in and saw them. She smiled at the site of them, and was glad her and Tahj decided that she was going to stay around instead of going right home. Tahj got up to answer the door, and Zette took her place beside Kam on the couch.
"You need anything Chubby Cheeks?"
"Naa, sis I'm good." Zette kissed Kam on the forehead then went to Tahj who was at the door asking for a password to get in. Zette pushed Tahj out of the way and opened the door.
When Kam's eyes set on Jaiden walking through the door her mind ran to her before her body could, and Jai saw it, and it lit up Jai's world to see her love still sitting before her. Jai walked over to Kam and hugged her long and hard as if she didn't want to let go, and in reality she didn't because she never wanted anything else to happen to Kam. They pulled away from one another and Kam noticed the tears falling from Jaiden's eyes. She wiped them away then said, "I thought thugs didn't cry."
Jaiden laughed. "Well this thug gonna always cry for her baby."
