 Nicole FolkesAn American artist with a Jamaican childhood, Nicole Folkes paints and resides in New York City. Although just thirty years old, her paintings illustrate the timeless essence of African American and Afro-Caribbean life. Her women remind us of our mothers, sisters, aunts, and that nosy woman who told on us when we thought no-one was looking. Her women are strong, sensual, and rely on one another for survival. The intimacy is evident, whether it be through friendships, or intimate relationships. It's the emotion emanating from her paintings that makes them so special. The HunnyPot collection is her response to the dearth of artwork for the lesbian community. "What I saw out there either insulted my intelligence or offended me as a woman. While sex is a major factor in any relationship, none of the work out there really showed how the women really felt about each other. I didn't think it was necessary to put a naked woman on a card to say, "Happy Birthday!" Ms. Folkes studied Studio Art at Binghamton University and at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Presently, she exhibits her work at the Lawrence Art Gallery, Brooklyn, New York and her first set of open edition prints are published by Artorg.org (Formally known as Essence Art).
